About Somnath Temple

The shiva linga in Somnath Temple is believed to be one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India, where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. The jyotirlingas are taken as the supreme, undivided reality out of which Shiva partly appears.

According to the Shiva Purana, as a result of an argument between Brahma and Vishnu regarding the supremacy of creation,Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga, to test them. Vishnu and Brahma split their ways to downwards and upwards respectively to find the end of the light in either directions. Brahma lied that he found out the end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat. Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would have no place in ceremonies while Vishnu would be worshipped until the end of eternity.

Where is Gir National Park situated - Gir National Park, national park in Gujarat state, west-central India, located about 37 miles (60 km) south-southwest of Junagadh in a hilly region of dry scrubland. It has an area of about 500 square miles (1,295 square km).

Gir National Park - તે ભારતના ગુજરાતમાં તાલાલા ગીર નજીક વન અને વન્યપ્રાણી અભયારણ્ય છે. તે સોમનાથની ઉત્તર-પૂર્વમાં 43 43 કિ.મી. (27 માઇલ), જૂનાગઢની દક્ષિણ-પૂર્વમાં 65 કિમી (40 માઇલ) અને અમરેલીની દક્ષિણ-પશ્ચિમમાં 60 કિમી (37 માઇલ) સ્થિત છે. તેની સ્થાપના 1965 માં કરવામાં આવી હતી, કુલ વિસ્તાર 1,412 કિમી 2 (545 ચોરસ માઇલ) સાથે, જેમાંથી 258 કિમી 2 (100 ચોરસ માઇલ) ને National-Park તરીકે અને 1,153 કિમી 2 (445 ચોરસ માઇલ) વન્યજીવન અભયારણ્ય તરીકે સંપૂર્ણપણે સુરક્ષિત છે. તે ખથીઅર-ગીર શુષ્ક પાનખર જંગલોના પૂર્વભાગનો ભાગ છે.

વનસ્પતિ અને પ્રાણીસૃષ્ટિ
1955 માં સામતાપાળ અને રાયજાદા દ્વારા ગીર જંગલના સર્વેક્ષણમાં 400 થી વધુ છોડની જાતિઓ નોંધવામાં આવી હતી. વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર વિભાગના એમ.એસ. બરોડા યુનિવર્સિટીએ તેમના સર્વે દરમ્યાન ગણતરીને સુધારીને 507 કરી છે. ચેમ્પિયન અને શેઠ દ્વારા 1964 વન પ્રકારનાં વર્ગીકરણ મુજબ, ગીરનું વન "5A / C-1a — ખૂબ શુષ્ક સાગનો વન" વર્ગીકરણ હેઠળ આવે છે. સાગ શુષ્ક પાનખર પ્રજાતિઓ સાથે મિશ્ર થાય છે.

• સુકા પાનખર ઝાડી વન અને-સુકા સવાન્નાહ જંગલો. તે પશ્ચિમ ભારતમાં સૌથી મોટું શુષ્ક પાનખર જંગલ છે.
• સાગના બેરિંગ વિસ્તારો મુખ્યત્વે જંગલના પૂર્વ ભાગમાં હોય છે, જે કુલ વિસ્તારનો લગભગ અડધો ભાગ ધરાવે છે. બાવળની ઘણી પ્રજાતિઓ મળી આવે છે. અહીં બર, જામુન,બાબુલ,જંગલની જ્યોત, ઝીઝિફસ, તેંડુ અને ધક પણ જોવા મળે છે. તેમજ કરંજ, અમલો, આમલી, સીરુસ, કલામ, ચારલ અને પ્રાસંગિક વડ અથવા વરિયાળીના ઝાડ જેવા છોડ જોવા મળે છે. આ બ્રોડફ્લાવ વૃક્ષો આ પ્રદેશમાં ઠંડી છાંયો અને ભેજનું પ્રમાણ પ્રદાન કરે છે. વનીકરણ કાર્યક્રમના ભાગરૂપે ગીરની દરિયાકાંઠે સરહદ પર કસુઆરીના અને પ્રોસોપિસનું વાવેતર કરવામાં આવ્યું છે.
• જંગલ એક મહત્વપૂર્ણ જૈવિક સંશોધન ક્ષેત્ર છે જેમાં નોંધપાત્ર શાસ્ત્રીય,શૈક્ષણિક, સૌંદર્યલક્ષી અને મનોરંજક મૂલ્યો છે. વાર્ષિક લણણી દ્વારા તે લગભગ 5 મિલિયન કિલોગ્રામ લીલો ઘાસ પૂરો પાડે છે, જેની કિંમત આશરે રૂ. 500 મિલિયન. જંગલ વાર્ષિક આશરે 123,000 મેટ્રિક ટન ઇંધણ લાકડું પ્રદાન કરે છે.

વન્યજીવન
ગીરની 2,375 વિશિષ્ટ પ્રાણીસૃષ્ટિની ગણતરીમાં સસ્તન પ્રાણીઓની 38 પ્રજાતિઓ, પક્ષીઓની 300 જેટલી પ્રજાતિઓ, સરિસૃપની 37 પ્રજાતિઓ અને જંતુઓની 2000 થી વધુ જાતિઓ શામેલ છે.


માંસાહારી જૂથમાં મુખ્યત્વે એશિયાઇ સિંહો, ભારતીય ચિત્તો, જંગલી બિલાડી, પટ્ટાવાળી હાયના, સોનેરી જેકલ, બંગાળ શિયાળ, ભારતીય ગ્રે મંગૂઝ અને રડ્ડ મંગૂઝ અને મધ બેઝરનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. એશિયાટિક વાઇલ્ડકેટ અને રસ્ટી-સ્પોટેડ બિલાડી થાય છે, પરંતુ ભાગ્યે જ જોવા મળે છે.

ગીરનાં મુખ્ય શાકાહારી પ્રાણીઓ ચિતલ, નીલગાય, સંબર, ચાર શિંગડાવાળા કાળિયાર, ચિંકારા અને જંગલી સુવર છે. આસપાસના વિસ્તારના બ્લેકબક્સ ક્યારેક અભયારણ્યમાં જોવા મળે છે. નાના સસ્તન પ્રાણીઓમાં, સર્ક્યુપિન અને સસલો સામાન્ય છે, પરંતુ પેંગોલિન ભાગ્યે જ જોવા મળે છે.

સરિસૃપનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ મગની મગર, ભારતીય કોબ્રા, કાચબો અને મોનિટર ગરોળી દ્વારા કરવામાં આવે છે જે અભયારણ્યના પાણીના શરીરમાં રહે છે. ઝાડવું અને જંગલમાં સાપ જોવા મળે છે. પાયથોન્સ પ્રવાહના કાંઠે સમયે જોવા મળે છે. ગીરનો ઉપયોગ  રાજ્ય વન વિભાગ દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યો છે જેણે 1977 માં ભારતીય મગર સંરક્ષણ પ્રોજેક્ટની રચના કરી હતી અને કમલેશ્વર તળાવ અને ગીરની આજુબાજુના પાણીની અન્ય નાના સંસ્થાઓમાં 1000 ની નજીક માર્શ મગર છોડ્યા હતા.

પુષ્કળ એવિફાઉના વસ્તીમાં પક્ષીઓની 300 થી વધુ જાતિઓ છે, જેમાંથી મોટાભાગની રહેવાસી છે. પક્ષીઓના સફાઇ કામદાર જૂથમાં ગીધની 6 રેકોર્ડ પ્રજાતિઓ છે. ગીરની કેટલીક લાક્ષણિક જાતોમાં ક્રેસ્ટેડ સર્પ ગરુડ, જોખમમાં મૂકાયેલા બોનેલીનું ગરુડ, પરિવર્તનીય બાજ-ઇગલ, બ્રાઉન ફીશ ઘુવડ, ભારતીય ગરુડ-ઘુવડ, રોક ઝાડવું-ક્વેઈલ, ભારતીય પીફૌલ, ભૂરા-કેપ્ડ પિગ્મી વુડપેકર, કાળા માથાના ઓરિઓલ, ક્રેસ્ટેડ ટ્રીવિફ્ટ અને ભારતીય પટ્ટા. 2001 ની છેલ્લી વસ્તી ગણતરીમાંથી ભારતીય ગ્રે હોર્નબિલ મળી નથી.

એશિયાઈ સિંહ
એશિયાઇ સિંહોનું નિવાસસ્થાન શુષ્ક ઝાડીવાળી જમીન અને ખુલ્લું પાનખર જંગલ છે. 2010 માં સિંહની વસ્તી 411 થી વધીને 2015 માં 523 થઈ હતી, અને તે બધા ગીર રાષ્ટ્રીય ઉદ્યાનમાં અથવા તેની આસપાસ રહે છે.

1900 માં એવો અંદાજ લગાવવામાં આવ્યો હતો કે વસ્તી 100 જેટલી ઓછી છે, અને એશિયાઇ સિંહોને સુરક્ષિત પ્રજાતિ તરીકે જાહેર કરવામાં આવી હતી. 1936 માં થયેલી વસ્તી ગણતરીમાં 289 પ્રાણીઓ નોંધાયા હતા. સિંહોની પ્રથમ આધુનિક ગણતરી રાજકોટના રાજકુમાર કોલેજના આચાર્ય Mark Alexander Wanter-Blath & R.S.
